American Soldier

A.

I chose this picture as the most powerful image in the Denver Post because it shows what the people who fight for our country go through everyday. The generation growing up doesn't realize that people in other countries don't have the luxurious lives that we are blessed to live everyday. These soldiers go through so many terrible and life scaring experiences so ordinary people can live freely in our country. They do the dirty jobs, the sacrificing jobs, and tough jobs so we don't have to. They are the true heroes of our country that we don't give enough credit for.

B. These images tell the story of a man in the Army, one of the toughest jobs on the planet. The story starts by him enlisting in the Army and graduating high school to fighting in Iraq and marrying his wife. It tells what he goes through everyday, the training, the fighting, the injuries, and the homecoming he's granted with when he comes home. He has done a great deed to our country and we are very grateful for what he has done.

C. They enhance the photographs by letting us know what is actually going on when the photo was taken so we can have background information.

D. Ian Fisher got into the delayed-entry program for the army to later be enlisted a year later. Fisher then graduates high school and goes to visit a recruiting office to learn more about what he should expect after leaving home in a week. Before he leaves his friends and family throw him a going away party and then he leaves for a medical exam with other recruits the next day. The next day a recruiter comes to pick Fisher up to go to a 14 week basic training camp. Through the first few days of recruiting Fisher and the other recruits go through countless training drill with very little rest. One the second day a childhood elbow injury is causing Fisher pain and him and his friends tell his bunkmate to cool it so they don't have to keep paying the price for his mistakes. The recruits go through an intense and restless couple of days so the army can be "molded" into the army way of life. Eight weeks into training camp they are hit by a simulated improvised explosive device and it didn't go as well as the sergeants hoped it would. The sergeants grew to love Fisher and said that he has come a long way from being a high school boy, he is now a well-oiled machine. Training camp is becoming a lot and Fisher bows his head in prayer so God can help him get through this. On the final week the recruits go through one more field exercise to put what they've learned to the test. After many long weeks Fisher has completed training camp and will be given his first assignment. He is first stationed an hour away from his high school friends and this begins to become complicated. Fisher is then caught by his squad leader for leaning on his weapon and is punished with pushup on his cigarette break. On his weekend back home he goes to the mall with his girlfriend to pick out her engagement ring but will now propose until that Christmas. Fisher completes his final training camp and is off for 11 months before getting stationed in Iraq. Due to an ankle injury he is restricted to what he can do but refuses to not be up when everyone else is in training. With how many injuries Fisher has had his father is becoming concerned with how many medications he is taking. after many struggles Fisher completes a climb up a steep ridge. The struggles of being close to home is beginning to take a toll because he feels like he doesn't fit in either world. Fisher spends precious hours with his friends and girlfriend before he leaves for Iraq. Fisher is deployed for a year and comes home to a great homecoming and marries his girlfriend Devin.
