A nut graph explains the context that is needed in a story. With using a nut graph is makes sure that you don't forget any important information. A nut graph also keeps you from writing to much in your story. Nut graphs allows you to include everything you need without writing a book. It is also used because not all the 5W's are always answered in the lead of your story.   With nut graphs they cannot be longer than one paragraph to keep everything to the point. Not all stories require you to have a nut graph but most of them time you do. A nut graph is also used when a 'where', 'who', 'why', or 'when' is not answered. Nut graphs usually show up in more feature stories than hard regular news stories.
